Milling and scoring pattern

Milling pattern

By default, the final contour is milled using end mills of 2.4 mm diameter. This implies that milled inward corners will have a fillet of 1.2 mm radius. The same applies in milling-scoring combinations where a milled contour meets a scored contour at a right angle. Alternatively, smaller end mills can be chosen with diameters from 0.7 to 2.4 mm, resulting in inward corners with smaller fillet radii. There will be fillet radii as well in all kinds of cut-outs, windows, slots and coding slots. For economic reasons the end mill diameter should be chosen as large as possible.

Absolute length tolerance up to 100 mm board length + 0.1 mm
Absolute length tolerance up to 500 mm board length + 0.2 mm

If a delivery panel is desired containing a single board or a step-and-repeat arrangement of boards, surrounded by a frame, the individual boards are held in the frame by fixing tabs. In order to separate the boards the customer can cut these tabs after processing. The following types of fixing tabs and predetermined breaking structures are contained in our standard:
A B D F a
Simple tab
  0,8   2,4
Tab with predetermined breaking holes
1,4
1,6
1,8
1,0 0,8
1,0
1,3
2,0
2,4

Tab with perforation
  1,0 0,65 2,0
2,4
1,0

If the customer does not specify the type and geometry of the fixing tabs Richter Elektronik will implement the simple tab. The same applies to the number of tabs and their position within the board contour.

Are certain rigidity criteria to be met for assembly or soldering process reasons the customer is supposed to supply the related information in advance. Apart from the size of the board, the width of the frame and the width of the fixing tabs the total rigidity of the delivery panel also very strongly depends on the material thickness of the board. The fixing tab geometries stated above are based on experience with standard material of 1.55 mm thickness.

If a partial length of the board contour is to be metallised by plating it is possible that the plated metal layer delaminates at the interface between the plated and the non-plated sections of the contour, resulting in the formation of metal lugs. This has to be accepted by the customer.

Scoring pattern

The standard scoring process involves the formation of scores parallel to the axes by a pair of rotating knife tools above and below the board. Alternatively, an engraver cutter can be used which – like using an end mill – allows scores in any direction regardless of the axes. The following definitions, however, do explicitly not relate to the engraver scoring method.

The scoring tools form V-shaped scores of approx. 30° on both sides of the board. The depth of these scores is adjusted such that a core with a remaining material thickness of approx. 0.30 mm is left from the 1.55 mm standard board thickness. Any other desired core thickness must be specified by the customer.

Absolute length tolerance up to 100 mm board length + 0,15 mm
Absolute length tolerance up to 500 mm board length + 0,25 mm
Core thickness of boards with 1.55 mm thickness 0,3 mm
Core thickness tolerance + 0.1 mm (applies up to 70 µ final Cu thickness)
Minimum thickness of base material / board suitable for scoring 0,5 mm
Maximum thickness of base material / board suitable for scoring 3,2 mm

Note:
The profile of a scored board contour is not rectangular with a flat edge but rather looks V-shaped with a broken edge. Due to the width of the score a minimum distance between contour and copper pattern of 0.45 mm must be maintained.
